Our Work in Schools

In the lifetime of this campaign we have worked with over 50 Primary and Secondary schools across the city, as well as Further Education establishments, identifying over 350 previously hidden young carers.

The team consists of Schools Project Manager, Tracey Stewart, and Schools Development Worker, Kelly Dunnett.  Tracey and Kelly are involved in supporting the following work within schools:

  • Awareness-raising assemblies
  • Personal and social education workshops
  • Working alongside an appointed Young Carer Co-ordinator within the school to ensure a whole-school approach to raising awareness of, identifying and supporting young carers
  • Chairing a bi-annual  Young Carer Co-ordinator Network Meeting to allow colleagues to share information and good practice
  • Advocating the rights of young carers within their educational environment, including the right to an assessment of their caring role
  • Providing 1-1 support to identified young carers
  • Setting up and delivering young carer support groups within school
  • Advising on the setting up and delivery of peer education or peer support groups within school
  • Consulting on the development of young carer policies within schools
  • Providing information, input at meetings or CPD training to ensure staff have the knowledge and confidence to identify, assess and provide personalised support to young carers
  • Support referrals to EYC where appropriate

We have developed two toolkits for working with pupils to raise awareness and encourage identification of hidden young carers within schools. The first is aimed at level one of the curriculum, and the second at level two and three.  These toolkits have been distributed to all primary and secondary schools in Edinburgh.  You can get access to further copies of these toolkits, or accompanying awareness-raising posters and leaflets, through the contact details on this page.
